Case Study — Product Development & Full-Stack

Building an Influencer Marketing Marketplace From a Broken Alpha

A UK marketing executive had a clear vision — a platform where brands could find, negotiate with, and contract influencers without the chaos of cold DMs and informal arrangements. He also had a broken Laravel prototype that couldn't be saved. Esseal rebuilt the entire thing and took it to market.

Why Brands Struggle to Work With Influencers at Scale

For brands running influencer marketing campaigns, the process is broken by default. Finding the right influencers means manually scrolling Instagram, cross-referencing follower counts, engagement rates, and niche fit — then cold messaging dozens of accounts hoping someone replies. Vetting is informal. Agreements are made in DMs. Payments are arranged outside the platform. Nothing is documented.

The client — a UK marketing executive — had been operating in this space long enough to know exactly what was wrong with it. His idea was simple: build the infrastructure that should already exist. A marketplace where brands post campaigns, vetted influencers apply, both sides negotiate on terms, and a formal contract closes the deal. Upwork, but built specifically for influencer marketing.

He had already attempted to build it. The Laravel alpha had account creation and campaign creation — and not much else. The foundation was too unstable to build on. He came to Esseal for a rebuild.

A full platform rebuild in Rails and React. Three dashboards, one ecosystem.

📢

Brand Dashboard

Brands create and manage campaigns — setting objectives, target demographics, content requirements, and budgets. Incoming influencer applications surface with full profile data: gallery, social media account stats, niche, and engagement metrics. Negotiation, contracting, and payment all handled within the platform.

🌟

Influencer Dashboard

Influencers apply to join the platform (approval required), link their social media accounts, and upload their content gallery. Campaign discovery, application management, negotiation threads, and payment tracking — a professional interface that replaces the informal DM-and-hope workflow entirely.

Admin Dashboard & Platform Features

Full platform oversight — user management, influencer vetting and approval, campaign moderation, analytics, and dispute resolution. Supporting features across all dashboards: in-platform messaging, contract generation, analytics, social media account linking, and multi-currency payment processing.

From Broken Prototype to Acquisition — The Outcome

The rebuilt platform went live and scaled to 100 onboarded brands and over 2,200 registered influencers across a wide range of niches — lifestyle, fitness, food, fashion, and more. The formalised approach to influencer contracting and in-platform payments was the differentiator that drove adoption.

The platform was subsequently acquired by a larger player in the influencer marketing industry. A clean exit — which is, ultimately, what a well-built product development engagement should enable.

This is a case study in what the right rebuild decision looks like. Rather than incrementally patching a broken foundation, Esseal recommended a clean restart on a proven full-stack architecture — and delivered a platform that was acquisition-ready within its first year of operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you build a custom influencer marketing platform?

Yes. Esseal built a full influencer marketing marketplace from scratch — brand dashboard, influencer dashboard, admin panel, campaign management, contract negotiation, gallery uploads, analytics, social media integrations, and in-platform payments. The platform scaled to 100 brands and 2,200 influencers before being acquired.

What does an influencer marketing platform need to function at scale?

At minimum: a brand-side campaign creation flow, an influencer discovery and vetting system, a two-way negotiation and messaging layer, contract management, and payment processing. Analytics, social media account linking, and gallery management are critical for vetting influencer quality. The platform Esseal built covers all of these across three separate dashboards.

Can you rebuild an existing platform that isn't working?

Yes. The client had a broken Laravel alpha with only account and campaign creation working. Esseal assessed what was salvageable, made the recommendation to rebuild from scratch in Rails and React, and delivered a production-ready platform. Rebuilding is often faster and safer than patching a fundamentally broken foundation.
